smorgasbord summer
This summer we are using Audrey's dance money to let her try a few new things. I am not a psycho dance mom, I don't see Audrey doing dance through high school or anything like that. We are just in there for fun and if at any time she finds something that she likes better I am more than willing to switch her.
Swimming went so much better than I had planned for. Audrey has a love/hate relationship with water and we weren't so sure which Audrey would show up at the Y. In fact, the only reason I put her in lessons is because she announced to me that she "knew how to swim and wasn't using her life jacket this year". She ended up with a wonderful lady teacher, Beth, who was a lady (score). There was only 1 other girl in the class so it was practically a private lesson. She isn't ready to be on her own yet but she definitely has a better feeling for the water and a little more confidence about things like splashing and jumping. It looks like it's going to be a good summer at the pool.
Soccer was a hoot. There were 6 sessions; 3 practices and 3 games. Audrey did really well at practice. Her coach was a lady, she got her own ball, there were stickers and snacks involved. I almost thought for a second that soccer was her calling.Swimming went so much better than I had planned for. Then came the games, Audrey was very upset that there was only 1 ball. I guess that wasn't "officially" discussed at practice. She spent most of her time dancing and cheering and waving and staring into space. At the end of the first game she told me that "it was just too busy out there". Trav told her that she needed to run more and so the next game she spent running up and down the field with no purpose whatsoever. It was classic. One thing I will say is that Audrey was in all 3 games almost the whole time because she was not a crier. But as it turns out, soccer is not her calling.

what's in a name?
I know this isn't true for everyone but I am fascinated about how true the meanings of both of my girl's names are.
Audrey - Noble Strength. Audrey is a preemie, a born fighter. She was screaming before they even had her out of my belly. She is very strong willed. She loves to argue; even when I agree with her she has to have the last word. She keeps me on my toes. She is a drama queen, a diva...she is my princess.
Lucy - Giver of Light. Lucy is a genuinely content, secure baby. If you are happy...so is she. She enjoys it just as much when you are tickling her sister as she does when you are tickling her. She makes me laugh every day. She just has this awnrey "I know that you think I'm cute even when I'm bad" look about her. She is a class clown...she is my sunshine.
looky what I did!
Every year I seem to care about the flowers in our yard for about 6 weeks. It starts in April, going from store to store, deciding what to get, where to put it, how far to go with my "theme", that's the fun part for me. I come home every day and water and pick and pluck and admire. Then the first 90 degree day hits. Then I am so over the whole thing.
So this year I decided that the south side of our house next to the garage screamed for a rose garden. We have 3 so far and I plan to add a couple each year during the 6 weeks that I care. Yesterday we came home from an extended weekend to my first ROSE!!!! I am a little perplexed that I am so excited about it...

thank yoooo!
Audrey knows a lot about cows. Her great Grandpa has a cattle farm. Our good friends have a cattle farm. Our neighborhood is surrounded by cows every which way you drive. So Audrey became curious exactly what all these cows are for. At first the obvious answer was milk...which lead to cheese and ice cream. Then came the inevitable meat and steak and hamburger conversation which was a little more interesting. After a while Audrey decided that every time we drove by the cows she should thank them for all of the things they give us...but she talked to them like this "moooo, thank yooooo for the mmmiiilk" in this very low cow-sounding voice. Every time it's something different; milk, steak, hamburger, cheese, ice cream. The other day, on the way her last soccer game (pics coming soon), I tell Audrey that cows also make leather like her shoes and she says to me "But Mommy, I don't see any pink sparkly cows out there".

the extended version
So here I am, mostly thanks to peer pressure and a fear that I will not remember these precious days when the girls get older. Seriously, how sad is it that dear Nickie is blogging my stories because I am too lazy to do it myself? So here it goes:
Set the scene - Audrey has just found out that Grandma and Grandpa are going out of town for the weekend...WITHOUT HER.
and then she says:
"I need to go to Target, I need to buy something, that will make me happy again"
"what exactly do you need?"
"lot's of things...shopping makes me feel better than medicine"
- Thankfully Travis blames his mother for her shopping gene and not me :)
Well, there you go folks - the first of many blogs quoting miss Audrey. There's a lot going on in that little head of hers...
